Paying for Psychological Testing: What to Know

Paying for Psychological Testing: What to Know

Many people assume psychological testing is fully covered by insurance, only to find that wait times are long, coverage is limited, or the evaluation process doesn’t provide the answers they need. At Ann Arbor Psychological Testing, we offer comprehensive yet efficient evaluations that focus on getting meaningful, practical results—without unnecessary delays or excessive testing.

What Are the Benefits of Private Psychological Testing?

Unlike some providers who prioritize quick screenings or overly extensive test batteries, we take a balanced, client-centered approach:

Faster access to testing – Many insurance-based providers have waitlists of 6+ months. Our clients typically get evaluated within weeks.

A comprehensive, yet targeted approach – We focus on addressing your questions by evaluating the target concern and related conditions thoroughly without bulky, excessive testing.

Results you can use – Our reports provide clear, practical recommendations for academic accommodations, workplace adjustments, and treatment planning.

Personalized attention – You’ll work directly with experienced psychologists who take the time to understand your concerns and tailor the assessment accordingly.

How Does Private Testing Compare?

Feature Private Testing (AAPT) Insurance-Based Testing*
Wait Time 2-4 weeks Often 6+ months
Scope of Evaluation Tailored & comprehensive Varies: brief screeners or excessive/unfocused testing
Report Detail Clear, practical recommendations May be minimal or not tailored for accommodations
Out-of-Pocket Cost Higher upfront, often reimbursable Lower upfront, but quality may vary

*Some insurance-covered providers offer thorough assessments, but availability and quality differ widely.

How Do Clients Cover the Cost?

We do not bill insurance directly, but many clients use one of the following options to cover the cost of psychological testing:

💰 Cash Pay / Self-Pay: Many clients choose to pay out-of-pocket for psychological testing to access a comprehensive, high-quality evaluation without the delays or restrictions often associated with insurance.

📄 Out-of-Network Insurance Benefits: If you have a PPO plan, your insurance may reimburse part of the cost. Most PPO plans offer out-of-network benefits, while most HMO plans (including Medicaid) do not. See below for additional details on checking your out-of-network benefits.

💳 Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) & Health Savings Accounts (HSA): These pre-tax funds can often be used for psychological testing. To check eligibility, contact your FSA/HSA provider (via phone or their website) and ask: “Is psychological testing a qualified medical expense under my plan?”

💼 Employer Reimbursement & EAP Benefits: Some employers cover assessment costs, especially for ADHD or learning-related evaluations that impact workplace performance. Check your employee handbook or benefits portal for: disability accommodations, mental health benefits, and wellness stipends. Many Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) also cover psychological assessments.

📌 How to Check Your Out-of-Network Benefits:

To determine if you’re eligible for reimbursement, call the customer service number on your insurance card and ask:

  • “Does my plan cover psychological assessments from an out-of-network provider?”
  • “What percentage of the cost is reimbursed, and what is my deductible?”
  • “Do I need pre-authorization before testing?”
